Mick the dog, is the Fireman Mascot at Romford Road, East Ham

Mick the dog, is the Fireman Mascot at Romford Road, East Ham.
Mrs Jarman of Leytonstone was sceptical when she read a notice at Broadway Fire Station, Stratford, about Micks Ladder Climbing Act. The show was held at his own station and Mrs Jarman, fire personnel and public cheered on the dog. Every run of the ladder raised £ 2 10 shillings in for Londons " Salute The Soldier" week.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heartwarming story of Mick the dog, the beloved fireman mascot at Romford Road in East Ham during the 1940s. Initially met with skepticism by Mrs Jarman of Leytonstone, Mick's ladder climbing act soon won over hearts and minds when a show was held at his own station. Fire personnel, members of the public, and Mrs Jarman herself cheered on this talented canine as he fearlessly ascended each rung. Not only did Mick's impressive act entertain and amaze spectators, but it also served a noble cause. Every climb up the ladder raised an admirable sum of £2 10 shillings for London's "Salute The Soldier" week. This charitable initiative aimed to support soldiers fighting in World War II and provide them with much-needed assistance. The photograph itself was taken on April 13th, 1944, capturing a moment frozen in time amidst the chaos of war. It serves as a poignant reminder of how even in times of conflict and uncertainty, acts of kindness and unity can bring joy to communities. This image is not just about Mick or his remarkable talent; it symbolizes resilience on the home front during World War II. It represents the dedication and bravery exhibited by both human firefighters and their loyal four-legged companions who worked tirelessly to protect their communities amidst adversity.
