EDITORS COMMENTS
Members of an American Eagle Squadron, formed with volunteer pilots from the United States during World War II, gather at an overseas Club Place challenge. This print captures a significant moment in history when America had not yet entered the war. The year is 1941, and tensions are rising as conflict looms over Europe. In this remarkable image, we see the brave men who joined forces with the Royal Air Force (RAF) to defend freedom and democracy. Standing tall in the back row are Pilot Officer L. F. Reed, Pilot Officer J. Moore, and Pilot Officer Carroll W. McColpin - later known as Major General McColpin. The front row features more heroes: Pilot Officer Edward T. Miluck, Mr P. Doogle of the BBC who likely documented their valiant efforts through radio broadcasts, Pilot Officer F. Patterson, and Sergeant Reade Franklin Tilley of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Their determined expressions reflect both camaraderie and unwavering dedication to their mission against tyranny and oppression during those dark times. This print serves as a powerful reminder of these courageous volunteers' sacrifice for a cause greater than themselves - fighting for liberty across borders far from home.
