Australia-Animal-Monkey-Colobus
Melbourne Zoos newest primate baby, a three week-old Colobus monkey, is held in the arms of her mother Clover, in Melbourne on June 29, 2011. Keepers have not been able to determine the sex of the newborn monkey which is pure white and won t display any black markings until its several months old. Black and White Colobus Monkeys, native to Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya, have seen their populations suffer from the fur trade during colonial times, but now the greatest threats to their survival are the loss of their habitat and the bushmeat trade, the large-scale hunting to supply meat to towns and cities. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print captured by William West, we are introduced to Melbourne Zoo's newest addition - a three-week-old Colobus monkey. Cradled in the loving arms of its mother Clover, this pure white baby primate is yet to reveal its gender and distinctive black markings that will develop over the next few months. Native to several African countries including Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania, Black and White Colobus Monkeys have faced numerous challenges throughout history. Once hunted for their fur during colonial times, these beautiful creatures now face greater threats such as habitat loss and the bushmeat trade. This image serves as a reminder of both the fragility and resilience of wildlife. It showcases an intimate bond between mother and child while shedding light on the conservation efforts required to protect these endangered species from further decline. William West's photograph encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also tells a larger story about our responsibility towards preserving biodiversity. Through his lens, we witness nature's delicate balance hanging in the balance; it urges us all to take action before it becomes too late.
