Royal Navy Merlin Helicopter

A Royal Navy Merlin helicopter taking part in an exercise over the south of England.
Merlin Mk1 the worlds most potent submarine hunting helicopter. The Merlin Mk1 have been in service with the Fleet Air Arm since the late 1990s and, after thorough testing and evaluation, the helicopters have been on the front line since 2000.
Our job is to find and if necessary destroy enemy submarines using our state-of-the-art sonar buoys which we drop into the ocean and Sting Ray torpedoes. Beyond searching for submarines, we carry out traditional maritime helicopter duties: anti-piracy/drug-running patrols, surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue, and passenger and load transfers.
There are more than 40 Merlins in service with the Fleet Air Arm in training and front-line squadrons. Most of these are in the middle of a £ 750m upgrade to turn the Merlin Mk1 into the Merlin Mk2 which has more powerful computer systems and is easier for aircrew to operate.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the awe-inspiring sight of a Royal Navy Merlin helicopter soaring through the skies during an exercise over the picturesque south of England. As one of the world's most potent submarine hunting helicopters, the Merlin Mk1 has been an integral part of the Fleet Air Arm since its induction in the late 1990s. Equipped with cutting-edge sonar buoys and Sting Ray torpedoes, our mission is to locate and neutralize enemy submarines lurking beneath the ocean's surface. However, our duties extend beyond submarine hunting; we also conduct vital tasks such as anti-piracy/drug-running patrols, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, search and rescue operations, as well as passenger and load transfers. With more than 40 Merlins currently serving in training and front-line squadrons within the Fleet Air Arm, efforts are underway to upgrade these remarkable machines from their original Mk1 version to become even more formidable as Mk2. This £750 million transformation includes enhanced computer systems for improved performance while ensuring ease of operation for our skilled aircrew. This image was submitted to Peregrine Trophy 2013 Royal Navy Photographic Competition—a testament to both the skillful photographer who captured this momentous scene and our unwavering dedication to safeguarding maritime security.
