Fitz Henry Lane Metal Print Collection

Fitz Henry Lane was an American painter and printmaker from the 19th century. He is best known for his luminist style of painting, which focused on capturing the effects of light on landscapes. His works often depicted scenes from his native New England, such as Gloucester Harbor and Boston Harbor. Lane was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1804 and began his artistic career as a lithographer before transitioning to painting. He was largely self-taught but received some instruction from the painter Robert Salmon. Lane's work earned him recognition both during his lifetime and after his death; he was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1848 and posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal for his contributions to art in 1937. His works are held by many major museums around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum.
