EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Colorsport Images, we are transported back to the thrilling 1981 St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster racecourse. The focus of the image is Shergar, a legendary racehorse ridden by Walter Swinburn. As they gallop towards the finish line, little did anyone know that this would mark Shergar's final ever race. Despite being a favorite among spectators and bettors alike, fate had other plans for Shergar on that fateful day. In an unexpected turn of events, he suffered a surprise defeat and finished in fourth place. It was a bittersweet moment for all who witnessed it - disappointment mingled with admiration for the incredible career he had enjoyed. However, what followed after his retirement from racing would forever etch Shergar's name into history books. Tragically, he was kidnapped by members of the IRA shortly after his retirement and vanished without a trace. Despite extensive efforts to locate him or negotiate his safe return, Shergar remained elusive. This poignant photograph serves as both a reminder of Shergar's remarkable talent on the racetrack and also as a testament to the mysterious circumstances surrounding his disappearance. It captures not only an iconic horse but also encapsulates an era filled with intrigue and unanswered questions. Colorsport photographer Andrew Cowie has masterfully frozen this pivotal moment in time – one that continues to captivate racing enthusiasts worldwide decades later.
