EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Musketeer from French Flanders in the 17th century, beautifully captured from an original painting by Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard. Handcolored with meticulous detail, this illustration brings to life the vibrant and ornate costume of a Musketeer during this historical period. Lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie for Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867, this image is part of a series that delves into the rich tapestry of fashion throughout history. Georges Duplessis himself was a distinguished curator at the Bibliotheque nationale's Prints department while Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was not only an artist but also an esteemed book illustrator and interior designer for various public buildings and churches. His talent earned him recognition as a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874.
