The Malakhov was one of the key Russian defences at Sebastopol during the Crimean War (1854-1856). A cornerstone of Lieutenant-General Eduard Totlebens intricate defensive system, its stone tower rested on earthworks and there were artillery batteries on either side, linked up to trenches and firing points. The French successfully assaulted the Malakhov on 8 September 1855, an act that marked the effective end of the siege.); eNational Army Museum; Scottish, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print, titled "Malakoff or round tower, c. 1855" transports us back to the tumultuous era of the Crimean War. Created by William Simpson and colored by E Walker in 1855, this artwork is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The image depicts the formidable Malakhov Tower, a crucial Russian defense structure during the Siege of Sebastopol. Designed by Lieutenant-General Eduard Totleben as part of an intricate defensive system, this stone tower stood atop earthworks with artillery batteries on either side. These elements were connected to trenches and firing points, forming a formidable stronghold against enemy forces. The lithograph showcases the impressive scale and architectural detail of the Malakhov Tower while also capturing its strategic significance within siege warfare. The vibrant colors add depth and life to this historical scene. Notably, it was on September 8th, 1855 that French forces successfully assaulted the Malakhov Tower—an act that marked a turning point in the siege and ultimately led to its end. As we gaze upon this print from Fine Art Finder's collection provided by Bridgeman Images, we are reminded of both the artistic skill involved in creating such detailed works and their ability to transport us through time into significant moments of history.
