(They were added in the early 19th century, by John Dobson.) By the time this view was sketched in about 1770, the Castle Keep had become run down. The completion of the town walls in the mid-14th century reduced the castles military importance. At the time of this view, the Castle was used as a jail for the County of Northumberland. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Castle, Newcastle upon Tyne" in all its historic glory. Created by an unknown English artist in the 18th century, this ink and pencil drawing measures 28.0 x 20.7 cm and is currently housed at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. The artwork offers a glimpse into the ancient appearance of the Castle Keep before it underwent renovations in the early 19th century. At the time this view was sketched around 1770, the Castle Keep had fallen into disrepair but still retained its grandeur. The completion of town walls during the mid-14th century diminished its military significance, leading to its transformation into a jail for Northumberland County. Interestingly, after 1618, houses began to emerge within the inner walls of the castle's grounds known as Castle Garth. This evolution highlights how structures once dedicated solely to defense gradually adapted to accommodate residential needs. With intricate details and precise lines, this drawing captures not only architectural elements but also tells a story about England's rich history and changing societal dynamics over time. It serves as a valuable historical document that allows us to appreciate both past and present aspects of Newcastle upon Tyne's iconic landmark - The Castle.
