Mother and Child by Gourd Trellis in Moonlight

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating colour woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Hokusai, now housed at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery in the UK. The print depicts a serene scene of domesticity, with a woman frilling cloth while her young son stands before her holding a birdcage. On the right side of the composition, large maize-cobs or sponge cucumbers are prominently displayed. The intricate details of this artwork showcase Hokusai's mastery of woodblock printing techniques. The outlines of foliage topped by a full moon add depth to the composition, while gauffrage (a technique that creates raised patterns) enhances its tactile quality. The inscription on the print reveals that it was signed by Souri-ga and features an accompanying poem starting from Nuno-no-Kai-Kinuta (referring to fabric and an old wooden tool) and ending with Kawa-no-Tsuki (meaning river and moon). Additionally, there is mention of Eight-bridge beside the poem. Attributed to Hishikawa Sōri, "Mother and Child by Gourd Trellis in Moonlight" exemplifies both artistic skill and cultural significance. It offers viewers a glimpse into everyday life during Japan's Edo era when Ito-Uri gourds were used for various purposes including filature production. This exquisite print serves as a testament to Hokusai's enduring legacy as one of Japan's most celebrated artists whose works continue to inspire awe centuries later.
