EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the exquisite beauty of a George II Red & Gilt-Japanned Secretaire Cabinet, dating back to around 1730. Crafted by the English School in the 18th century, this cabinet stands at an impressive size of 230x103x60 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The intricate details of this piece are truly mesmerizing. Adorned with Chinese pagodas, architectural complexes, figures engaged in hunting and leisurely activities, landscapes teeming with foliage, animals and birds - every inch of this cabinet tells a story. The arched broken cavetto cornice takes center stage, crowned by a small pedestal topped with a turned flaming finial. As you delve deeper into its design, you discover the pair of arched cupboard doors inset with mirror-plates and engraved brass escutcheons. Behind them lies an arrangement of drawers and pigeon-holes surrounding a central cupboard door adorned with another mirror-plate. Fluted pilasters flank this central feature. Opening up the fall-front bureau reveals yet another similar arrangement above a sliding panel that conceals an additional compartment. Supported by bun feet and boasting two short and two long graduated drawers above a waved apron - every element has been meticulously crafted to perfection. Although some elements have undergone restoration over time – such as re-silvering one mirror plate while replacing another – the overall decoration remains refreshingly intact. This print from Bridgeman Images allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship but also the rich history behind this remarkable piece of furniture artistry.
