EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "Jane Lewson, remarkable for her age and peculiarities" offers a glimpse into the intriguing life of an eccentric woman from 1821. Jane Lewson, known as Lady Lewson among a select few, was renowned for her idiosyncrasies and advanced years. It is believed that she may have served as the inspiration for Charles Dickens' iconic character Miss Havisham in his novel Great Expectations. Residing in Clerkenwell, Jane's eccentricity blossomed after becoming a widow at the tender age of twenty-six. Her unconventional behavior included donning clothing fashionable during her wedding era until her last breath, rarely engaging in personal hygiene practices, smearing pig fat on her cheeks, and confining herself to just one room within her grand residence. The portrait showcases Jane Lewson standing proudly with a cane or stick by her side while draped in an elegant shawl and wearing a distinctive dress topped with an old-fashioned hat. The lines etched by Robert Cooper capture both the physical appearance of this aged woman and hint at the depth of personality hidden beneath. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to Georgian England where individuals like Jane were celebrated for their uniqueness amidst societal norms. This image serves as a testament to human individuality and reminds us that even those considered eccentric can leave an indelible mark on history.
