EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, published in 1897, showcases the delicate beauty of butterflies and moths. The print is divided into three sections, each displaying a variety of species with their corresponding caterpillars or pupae. On the left side, we are introduced to the Pine looper moth accompanied by its caterpillar and the Western larch case-bearer showcasing eaten needle points of a larch. Evergestis extimalis is also featured alongside its caterpillar, while the Pine shoot moth displays both its caterpillar and pupa within a cut twig. Lastly, we see the Pine resin-gall moth with bile and pupae capsule. In the middle section lies an exquisite White-spotted pinion fluttering gracefully next to a Pine beauty accompanied by its vibrant caterpillar. The Mottled umber makes an appearance in male and female forms along with their distinctive caterpillar. Additionally, we witness the Dotted border in both genders followed by the Winter moth depicted as male, female, and as a charming green caterpillar. Completing this section is an Apple ermine cocoon housing both a fascinating caterpillar and moth. The right side features one of nature's most iconic examples of evolution -the Peppered moth- displayed alongside its pupa stage as well as its strikingly patterned black-and-white form. Furthermore, we encounter the Rustic shoulder-knot paired with its own intriguing caterpillar while being complemented by the Red underwing exhibiting stunning colors. This remarkable artwork captures not only these mesmerizing creatures but also serves as a testament to scientific exploration during that era when such detailed illustrations were highly valued for educational purposes.
