EDITORS COMMENTS
This triptych woodblock print, created by the esteemed master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, transports us into a thrilling scene from Japanese folklore. Entitled "The Hunt" this artwork depicts the legendary battle between Hayata Tadazumi and the fearsome Nue creature amidst a backdrop of thunder and lightning. With vibrant colors and intricate details, Kuniyoshi skillfully captures the intensity of this epic confrontation. The Nue, an awe-inspiring composite beast with features borrowed from various animals, looms large as it is struck down by Tadazumi's sword. This dramatic clash showcases both the artist's mastery of technique and his ability to convey a sense of action and movement. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese culture, this print exemplifies the rich heritage of Asian art. The samurai warrior in ornate armor stands as a symbol of honor and bravery while engaging in combat against mythical creatures. The floral patterns adorning their attire add an element of beauty amidst the chaos. As we admire this remarkable piece, we are reminded of similar mythological creatures found in Greek mythology such as the Chimera. It is fascinating to see how different cultures have interpreted these fantastical beings throughout history. Bernard Allum has graciously shared this exquisite artwork from his personal collection, allowing us to appreciate its historical significance and artistic brilliance. Through this print, we are transported back in time to witness a momentous battle that combines nature's fury with human strength and determination.
