EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage Japanese woodblock print by Toyohara Chikanobu takes us back to the Meiji period, showcasing the transition from traditional samurai culture to modernity. In this particular image, dating back to 1892 and part of the series "Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety" we witness a harmonious blend of old and new. The focal point is a traditional Japanese governess attentively caring for three children. While two are dressed in customary attire, one child stands out with their modern Western clothing, symbolizing the influence of foreign cultures on Japan during this era. The top portion depicts a typical Japanese family scene, emphasizing the contrast between tradition and progress. Chikanobu's mastery is evident in his use of vibrant colors and intricate details that bring life to each character. The mischievous laughter and playful gestures captured in this woodcut evoke a sense of joy and curiosity among these young ones as they reach out, wave, or ask questions. The beauty lies not only in the subjects but also in the surrounding elements: delicate flowers, towering trees, calm seas. These natural motifs add depth to the composition while reflecting Japan's deep-rooted connection with nature. As part of Bernard Allum's Ephemera collection, this print serves as a remarkable testament to Chikanobu's talent and his contribution to oriental style woodblock art. It invites us into an enchanting world where tradition meets transformation—a snapshot frozen in time that continues to captivate viewers today.
