The Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It was founded in the 10th century by the hermit Ivan of Rila (876 - 946). The Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgarias most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments. In the middle of the 15th century it was destroyed by the Ottomans. Shortly after that, it was rebuilt in the end of the 15th century. It was destroyed by fire in 1833 and then reconstructed between 1834 and 1862 under the famous architect Alexi Rilets. The monastery complex is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Bulgarian National Revival or Bulgarian Renaissance architecture and was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983
