Arrival of the first train of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad at James Town... 1860. Creator: Unknown
Arrival of the first train of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad at James Town from New York, 1860....the line just opened [supplies] an immediate connected highway from the chief emporium of the United States to the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, and all the vast regions watered by those giant streams...It is needed as the high road from east to west; it is required for the settlers who already throng the whole breadth of territory which it serves..."No part of the globe presents such an extent of uniform fertility"...By the formation of the Atlantic and Great Western...which runs from the flourishing town of Salamanca, on the New York and Erie, to Dayton in Ohio, the whole line from New York to the Missouri, twelve hundred miles in length, is at once completed with a uniform broad gauge...One extraordinary feature of this traffic is the weekly transport of above 500 tons (nearly 100 tons daily) of native coal oil, which actually rises from the earth in the vicinity of some stations in columns like the fountains of Trafalgar-square, and in a state almost ready for consumption! These oil-springs are only of recent discovery'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment of the first train of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad arriving at James Town, Missouri, in 1860. The line's opening marked a significant milestone in American transportation history, providing an uninterrupted route from the bustling commercial hub of New York to the vast regions along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The railroad was essential for the growing number of settlers in the area, connecting them to the eastern United States and facilitating the movement of goods and people. As the caption from the "Illustrated London News" notes, "No part of the globe presents such an extent of uniform fertility" as the region served by the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad. With the completion of the entire line from Salamanca, New York, to Dayton, Ohio, a distance of twelve hundred miles, travel between the east and west became more accessible than ever before. An intriguing aspect of this new railroad was the weekly transport of over 500 tons (approximately 100 tons daily) of native coal oil. These oil springs, discovered only recently, were a unique feature of the railroad, with the oil rising from the earth in columns, much like fountains, and in a nearly consumable state. The discovery of these oil springs added to the railroad's significance, providing a valuable resource for both the railroad and the communities it served.
