Retreat of US 7th Cavalry Battalions under Major Marcus Reno during the Battle of Little Bighorn, Montana, USA (c1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This powerful print captures a pivotal moment in American history - the retreat of the US 7th Cavalry battalions under Major Marcus Reno during the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn. The battle took place on June 25-26,1876 and resulted in a devastating defeat for the cavalry at the hands of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. In this image, we witness Major Reno's detachment forced to retreat after encountering a much larger force. Meanwhile, General George Armstrong Custer's troops faced an even grimmer fate as they were surrounded and killed to the last man in what became known as Custer's Last Stand. The Native American victory at Little Bighorn temporarily halted white settlers' encroachment onto their lands. However, it was only a temporary delay in their struggle against westward expansion. This historic photograph not only showcases the intensity and chaos of battle but also serves as a reminder of the bravery displayed by both sides. It is a testament to those who fought valiantly on horseback amidst vast plains while wearing traditional headdresses and headgear. Preserved through ink on paper, this artwork from Heritage Images allows us to reflect upon one chapter in America's Wild West era - where war raged between cultures seeking control over land and resources.
