EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain Cook, 19th century. Artist: E Scriven This print captures the essence of Captain James Cook, an iconic figure in English exploration and navigation during the 18th century. In this portrait, Captain Cook is depicted seated in his naval uniform with a map of the world resting beneath his hand. Cook's remarkable achievements are highlighted through his three voyages of discovery. During his first voyage, he meticulously observed the transit of Venus and skillfully charted the coasts of New Zealand and eastern Australia, claiming these lands for Britain. His second expedition focused on exploring the vast Southern Ocean. However, it was during his final journey that tragedy struck. With hopes to find a northern sea passage connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, Cook encountered hostility from natives in Hawaii which led to a fatal altercation. The black-and-white engraving beautifully captures both Cook's determination as an explorer and his role as a captain leading sailors through treacherous waters. This print serves as a powerful reminder of England's maritime dominance during this period. Created by artist E Scriven under Nathaniel Dance Holland's direction, this historical artwork offers us insight into one man's extraordinary contributions to navigation and circumnavigation while shedding light on the challenges faced by explorers like Captain James Cook.
