Claridges Hotel, Mayfair, Westminster, London, c1877 (1878). Claridges was founded in 1812 as Mivarts Hotel but was renamed after the hotel was sold to a Mr and Mrs Claridge in 1854. In 1860 Empress Eugenie made an extended visit and entertained Queen Victoria at the hotel. Richard D Oyly Carte, founder of the rival Savoy Hotel, purchased Claridges in 1894 and demolished the building, replacing it with the hotel that stands today, which opened in 1898. During the Second World War it was the base of the Kingdom of Yugoslavias forces in exile and home of King Peter II of Yugoslavia. From Old and New London Illustrated, Vol IV, by Edward Walford. This vintage print captures the iconic Claridges Hotel in Mayfair, Westminster, London, circa 1877. Originally known as Mivarts Hotel when founded in 1812, it was later renamed after Mr and Mrs Claridge purchased it in 1854. The hotel gained prestige when Empress Eugenie made an extended visit and entertained Queen Victoria here in 1860. In 1894, Richard D Oyly Carte, founder of the rival Savoy Hotel, acquired Claridges and replaced the original building with the magnificent hotel that still stands today. Opening its doors to guests in 1898, Claridges became synonymous with luxury and exclusivity. During World War II, this esteemed establishment served as a base for the Kingdom of Yugoslavia's forces in exile and was home to King Peter II of Yugoslavia.
