Confidences, from A New Sentimental Education, 1901. Creator: Charles Maurin (French, 1856-1914)
Confidences, from A New Sentimental Education, 1901. Charles Maurins first colour intaglio prints were made around the same time as Cassatts extraordinary series of 10 colour prints, and his subsequent graphic work owed a debt to her prints in both technique and subject. Later, he made two suites of prints, A Sentimental Education, 1897, and A New Sentimental Education, 1901, both of which were described as depicting " a mother attentive to the care of her child through the intimate details of daily life." Unlike Cassatts cursory and abstracted drypoints of a mother and child like Reine and Margot Seated on a Sofa, Maurin surrounded his figures with domestic accoutrements. The charm of this subject is the rapt concentration with which the little girl listens to her mother, who whispers in her ear

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Confidences, from A New Sentimental Education, 1901" captures a tender moment between a mother and her child. Created by Charles Maurin, a French artist known for his color intaglio prints, this artwork showcases his indebtedness to Mary Cassatt's technique and subject matter. In contrast to Cassatt's abstracted drypoints of mothers and children, Maurin surrounds his figures with domestic details that add depth and charm to the composition. The focal point of the image is the little girl who listens attentively as her mother whispers in her ear. Her rapt concentration reflects the intimacy shared between them. Maurin's work often depicted mothers caring for their children through everyday activities, portraying the nurturing bond they share. This particular piece belongs to Maurin's series called "A New Sentimental Education" which explores these themes further. The softground etching and aquatint technique used in this print adds a delicate touch to the overall composition. The subtle colors and intricate lines enhance the emotional connection portrayed between mother and child. This artwork is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art. It serves as a timeless reminder of the profound love found within familial relationships while paying homage to both Charles Maurin's artistic style and Mary Cassatt's influence on his work.
