EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Edmund Calamy the Elder, a prominent figure in 17th century English Presbyterian church leadership. The artist behind this early 19th-century piece is R Cooper. Calamy, of Huguenot descent, was elected to the curacy of the Church of St Mary Aldermanbury in London in 1639. He played a significant role in defending the Presbyterian cause during the opening of the Long Parliament in 1640. After the Restoration, he became one of Charles II's chaplains and supported his return to power. However, due to his nonconformity with the Act of Uniformity passed in 1662, he was dismissed from the Church. The portrait captures Calamy's strong religious convictions and dedication as a clergyman. His influence extended beyond England; he was an advocate for Protestantism and Puritanism throughout his life. In addition to his religious pursuits, Calamy experienced firsthand the devastation caused by the Great Fire of London in 1666. This event deeply affected him and tragically led to his death shortly after. R Cooper skillfully brings out Calamy's character through this engraving-turned-photo print. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, it provides us with a glimpse into an important period of British history and highlights one man's unwavering commitment to his faith despite facing numerous challenges along his path.
