Gulielmus Hogarth, 19th century. Artist: James Mollison

Gulielmus Hogarth, 19th century. The portrait deliberately projects a guide to the way Hogarth (1697-1764) wanted others to think of him. The artists painting in informal dress rests on a pile of books labelled (in the finished engraving) Shakespeare, Milton and Swift. William Shakespeare and John Milton were generally acknowledged to be the greatest modern English authors and Jonathan Swift was a vigorous modern satirist. The palette and graver represent Hogarths twin roles as painter and engraver and the Line of Beauty alludes to his favourite art theory. The only living object in the painting is Hogarths pet pug, Trump. Hogarth announces himself as essentially English. He despised the slavish following of foreign models, and believed that art should be based on the imitation of nature, like the work of the great English authors

Gulielmus Hogarth, 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating portrait that offers a glimpse into the mind of the renowned artist William Hogarth. Painted by James Mollison, this print deliberately projects an image of how Hogarth wanted others to perceive him. The artist is depicted in informal dress, seated upon a stack of books labeled Shakespeare, Milton, and Swift - three literary giants whom he greatly admired. Hogarth's choice of props symbolizes his belief in the importance of English literature and its influence on his artistic endeavors. As both a painter and engraver, represented by the palette and graver beside him, he embraced his dual roles with passion and dedication. The inclusion of the Line of Beauty further alludes to his favorite art theory. Amidst this scene lies Hogarth's beloved pet pug named Trump - the sole living object within the painting. This charming addition not only showcases his affection for animals but also emphasizes his self-proclaimed identity as essentially English. In contrast to those who blindly followed foreign models, Hogarth believed that true art should be rooted in nature itself. He drew inspiration from great English authors like Shakespeare, Milton, and Swift who had left an indelible mark on literature. Through this masterful self-portrait captured by James Mollison's skilled hand, we are granted insight into William Hogarth's profound love for England and its rich cultural heritage.
