EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Howrah Floating Bridge in Calcutta, India, circa 1905. The bridge, also known as Howrah Bridge or Rabindra Setu, was a pontoon bridge constructed over the Hooghly River in West Bengal. Its construction began after the Government of Bengal passed the Howrah Bridge Act in 1871. The image showcases a bustling scene with various modes of transportation navigating across the floating bridge. Despite the rain pouring down from above, cars and pedestrians brave their way through this vital artery connecting both sides of Calcutta. The sepia-toned photograph adds an air of nostalgia to this snapshot from early 20th century India. The engineering marvel that is Howrah Bridge stands tall against the backdrop of Kolkata's skyline, demonstrating its significance as a geographical feature within Hindoostan (India). Constructed by Bradford Leslie and assembled on-site using parts shipped from England, it became operational in 1874.
