John Gilpin attaches wine bottles to his belt, 1878, (c1918). Creator: Randolph Caldecott

John Gilpin attaches wine bottles to his belt before setting out on his journey, 1878, (c1918). Gilpin takes the wine, in stone bottles, which his wife left behind. John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a humorous scene from the late 18th century, brought to life by artist Randolph Caldecott. Titled "John Gilpin attaches wine bottles to his belt" this image depicts a man preparing for an eventful journey. Inspired by William Cowper's comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" the artwork showcases the protagonist, a draper named John Gilpin, getting ready for his trip to Edmonton. Intriguingly, before setting off on his adventure, Gilpin cleverly fastens stone wine bottles to his belt. These bottles were left behind by his wife and serve as both refreshment and company during his travels. The comical nature of this scene is enhanced by Caldecott's monochrome style, capturing the essence of 18th-century England. "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" recounts how our protagonist loses control of his horse along the way and ends up in Ware instead of reaching Edmonton. This misadventure adds an element of surprise and amusement to the story. Caldecott's artistic rendition not only pays homage to Cowper's ballad but also reflects British humor and wit prevalent during that era. As we observe this amusing snapshot from history, we are reminded of the timeless appeal that laughter holds across generations.
