King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, 1435. Artist: Conrad Witz
King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, 1435. In this panel from the Heilspiegel Altarpiece, Witz painted a gold background with filigree ornamentation and placed both his figures before it. The blue, red, green, and white of the clothing and the restrained ochre of the hands and faces may be the only colours, but they radiate light when set against the intense gold of the background, whose effect is increased still further by the elaborate inlay pattern. Witz recognized that an abstract gold background sharpened the contours of a form and made it almost tangible. From the collection of the Staatliche Museen, Berlin, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the masterpiece "King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba" painted by Conrad Witz in 1435. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this panel from the Heilspiegel Altarpiece, where he skillfully created a gold background adorned with intricate filigree ornamentation. Against this radiant backdrop, both figures are placed, their clothing adorned with vibrant shades of blue, red, green, and white. However, it is the restrained ochre tones used for their hands and faces that truly bring them to life. Witz understood that an abstract gold background would enhance the contours of his subjects and make them almost tangible. The effect is further heightened by the elaborate inlay pattern on the golden surface. This particular print captures every nuance of light radiating from these colors against the intense gold background. Housed within the esteemed collection of Staatliche Museen in Berlin, Germany, this artwork depicts a scene from the Old Testament where King Solomon welcomes Queen Sheba bearing gifts. It beautifully portrays royalty and religious themes intertwined during Germany's Renaissance period. The artistry displayed here exemplifies Witz's mastery over his chosen medium - painted wood - as well as his ability to evoke emotion through color and composition. As viewers gaze upon this remarkable piece captured by AccuSoft Inc. , they are transported back to 15th-century Germany, immersed in a world where history meets artistic brilliance.
