The Mahdi, rebel against Egyptian rule in the Sudan, c1885

The Mahdi, rebel against Egyptian rule in the Sudan, c1885. Mohammed Ahmed (1848-1885), known as the Mahdi (the expected one) was a charismatic former local government officer who, beginning in 1882, led a rebellion against Egyptian rule in Eastern Sudan to try to establish an Islamic state. His army laid siege to Khartoum, and on 26 January 1885 the city was overrun by the Mahdis forces and its British commander, General Gordon, was killed. The Mahdi died, probably from typhus, 5 months later, but the British launched a military campaign under Kitchener in 1898 to avenge Gordon and defeat the Mahdists

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Mahdi, rebel against Egyptian rule in the Sudan, c1885. This powerful print captures the enigmatic figure of Mohammed Ahmed, also known as the Mahdi (the expected one), who led a fervent rebellion against Egyptian rule in Eastern Sudan during the late 19th century. A former local government officer turned charismatic leader, Ahmed aimed to establish an Islamic state and free his people from foreign domination. In this black and white portrait, we see a man with a commanding presence. His strong body is adorned with traditional clothing and he wears a distinguished beard that symbolizes wisdom and authority. The intricate headgear crowning his head adds to his regal appearance. The image serves as a reminder of the turbulent times when revolution was brewing in Sudan. It depicts not only Ahmed's determination but also reflects the religious fervor that fueled his cause. As an influential Muslim leader, he inspired countless followers to join him on his quest for independence. Tragically, this rebellion culminated in the siege of Khartoum where General Gordon met his demise at the hands of Ahmed's forces. Although victorious at that momentous battle, Ahmed's reign was short-lived as he succumbed to typhus just five months later. This wood engraving transports us back in time to witness one man's struggle for freedom and self-determination amidst political turmoil and religious zeal.
