EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time - a Mk 1 BMC Austin 1800 parked outside a tyre fitting bay in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, back in 1969. The iconic Austin 1800, affectionately known as the Land Crab for its distinctive low-slung appearance, was a popular British car produced from 1964 to 1975. With approximately 105,000 units manufactured during its production run, it became a familiar sight on the roads of Britain. The tyre fitting bay featured in this image was part of the ASDA supermarket at that time referred to as ASDA Queens. It showcases an era when supermarkets were expanding their services beyond just groceries. This snapshot offers us glimpses into not only automotive history but also the evolving service industry landscape of mid-20th century Britain. In this scene filled with nostalgic charm, we see a woman dressed elegantly in her overcoat and hat overseeing the motor maintenance process. Her presence adds depth to the photograph by highlighting gender roles prevalent at that time within industries like transportation and automobile maintenance. Preserved through monochrome tones by photographer Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this image serves as both a testament to our rich automotive heritage and an intriguing window into life in South Yorkshire during the swinging sixties.
