EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the industrial history of Whitwick Brickworks, located in Coalville, Leicestershire. Taken in 1963 by renowned photographer Michael Walters, it showcases a palletising machine diligently loading finished bricks onto pallets. Whitwick Brickworks was strategically positioned to benefit from the extension of the Leicester-Swannington Railway, which ran adjacent to the nearby Whitwick Colliery. This advantageous location allowed for efficient transportation of materials and products, contributing to the success of the brickworks. The image exudes an air of productivity and craftsmanship as this powerful machinery plays its role in transforming raw materials into essential building blocks. The monochrome palette adds a timeless quality to the scene, emphasizing both the historical significance and enduring legacy of this once-thriving industry. Sadly, like many traditional brickworks across Britain, Whitwick Brickworks closed its doors later in the 20th century. However, through photographs such as this one by Michael Walters, we can still appreciate and celebrate their contribution to our architectural heritage. Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd has preserved this remarkable piece of history for future generations to admire. As we gaze upon this snapshot from a bygone era, we are reminded not only of our industrial past but also how progress shapes our landscapes over time.
