EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Paper-making and cutting machine by Bryan, Donkin and Co., showcased at the International Exhibition in 1862. The machine, an engineering marvel of its time, was designed to manufacture an endless sheet of paper of any width under seven feet. The machine's impressive capabilities extended beyond just producing paper; it also imparted watermarks and cut the sheets into desired sizes and forms. The side elevation of the machine reveals its intricate workings. At the beginning of the process, the pulp, supplied in a liquid state, enters the machine. The sand-catcher (1) removes any unwanted impurities, and the knot-strainer (2) filters out any knots or other debris. The endless wire table or apron (3) then carries the pulp to the iron rollers (4), where the water is removed, and the paper begins to take shape. The drying-rollers (5) further remove moisture, preparing the paper for the final stage. The cutting machine, not visible in this image, is responsible for cutting the sheets to the desired size. Should the paper require a watermark, a copper roller, covered with wire gauze, and a projecting wire (6), acts upon the paper after it leaves the travelling wire-table and before it is submitted to the cast-iron rollers. This beautiful machine, a testament to the ingenuity of the Victorian era, effects the whole operation of paper-making, delivering sheets of paper, dried, faced, and cut, at the other end. Impressively, this machine was capable of making an endless sheet of paper twenty miles long in about twenty-four hours.
