The Revolution in Sicily - Calatafimi, 1860. Creator: Unknown

The Revolution in Sicily - Calatafimi, 1860. Garibaldi, in his rapid rush from Marsala to Palermo, pounced, it will be remembered, upon Calatafimi, a town in the intendancy of Trapani. Its inhabitants have been variously estimated at from 5000 to 10, 000 - one authority, indeed, fixing the number as high as 20, 000. The town, which is of wretched aspect, was once dominated by a castle now in ruins. From this castle...an extraordinary country is seen - the land and rocks being in confusion, as if tossed about by some terrible earthquake'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the scene of The Revolution in Sicily at Calatafimi in 1860. The image captures the moment when Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Expedition of the Thousand stormed the town, which was then part of the intendancy of Trapani. The population of Calatafimi is estimated to have ranged from 5000 to 20,000 residents, living in a town of wretched aspect, dominated by a castle in ruins. The castle, perched atop a hill, offers a stark contrast to the chaotic landscape below, where the land and rocks appear to be in a state of confusion, as if tossed about by some terrible earthquake. The print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, offers a glimpse into the rural Italian countryside during a pivotal moment in Italian history. The Rebellion of Sicily and the broader Risorgimento movement led to the unification of Italy under one government, marking the end of regionalism and the beginning of a new era. This evocative print, with its intriguing composition and atmospheric tone, invites us to explore the history and geography of this fascinating period.
