Wreck of "The Waterman"steamer, off Hastings, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Wreck of " The Waterman" steamer, off Hastings, 1844....this gallant little craft met with the following serious accident off Hastings. It appears that she arrived at Dover from Ostend...and left that port about noon on a pleasure trip to Hastings, having on board a party of the directors of the company, Mr. Penn, the engineer, and several other gentlemen. She arrived at Hastings...and in passing the town unfortunately too near in shore, struck on a dangerous reef off the Priory, known as the Castle Rocks, which she passed over, and injured her bottom. It being found that the water was flowing fast into her, she was put about, and run on the sand off the Parade, where she filled as the tide flowed, and at high water the hull was covered. A quantity of empty casks were slung round her during the evening, by means of which she was got further in, and on Sunday she was pumped out, and had her leaks stopped. She has since floated off, and been removed opposite the Priory stade for the purpose of undergoing repairs. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic scene of the wrecked steamer, "The Waterman" off Hastings in 1844. The unknown creator skillfully portrays the aftermath of a fateful accident that unfolded on this gallant little craft's ill-fated pleasure trip. Loaded with a party of directors, Mr. Penn, the engineer, and several other gentlemen, she embarked from Dover after arriving from Ostend earlier that day. As she approached Hastings and veered too close to shore, disaster struck when "The Waterman" collided with the treacherous Castle Rocks reef near the Priory. Despite passing over it initially, her bottom suffered significant damage. Realizing that water was rapidly flooding into the vessel, quick action was taken to turn her around and beach her on the sand off Parade. With each rising tide engulfing more of her hull until completely submerged at high water mark; empty casks were ingeniously attached around her during evening hours to assist in moving her further ashore. On Sunday morning, diligent efforts commenced as she was pumped out and necessary repairs made to seal any leaks. Finally freed from its sandy embrace, "The Waterman" now rests opposite Priory stade awaiting extensive restoration work. This poignant image immortalizes not only an unfortunate maritime incident but also serves as a testament to human resilience and determination in salvaging what remains after such adversity.
