Burton opened a store on the site in 1931; the store shown in this photograph opened in 1935. The building is considered to be an important and unusual example of Burton in-house architectural design. Granite facades featured on around 15 Burton stores, with the granite for the Hull store being supplied by Fenning & Co of Hammersmith
