EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the late 12th century, offering a glimpse into the enchanting world of Latton Priory. As we gaze upon this reconstruction painting, we are transported to a bygone era filled with tranquility and spiritual devotion. Latton Priory was once a humble priory founded in the 12th century. Its original community comprised only a prior and two canons, who dedicated their lives to prayer and contemplation within these sacred walls. However, as history unfolded, John Taylor found himself as the last prior and sole remaining canon during the Dissolution period. Intriguingly, following an inquisition in 1534, Taylor made the difficult decision to abandon Latton Priory forever. Subsequently, in 1536, this cherished property fell into Crown hands and was granted to Sir Henry Parker. Through this remarkable illustration brought to life by Judith Dobie's skilled hand, we witness an oblique view of Latton Priory as it may have appeared centuries ago. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring; every brushstroke meticulously capturing the essence of this augustinian monastery nestled amidst North Weald Bassett's picturesque landscape within Epping Forest. As we admire this exquisite painting today, let us reflect on its historical significance—a testament not only to Latton Priory's existence but also to England's rich medieval heritage.
