EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, an iconic bridge that connects South Gloucestershire to Wales. The image showcases the installation of the first deck units of the bridge during a visit by Robert Key, Transport Minister. The Second Severn Crossing was a remarkable joint venture between Laing Civil Engineering and GTM, a French company. Spanning over 5000 meters across the majestic River Severn, this cable-stayed bridge took four years to complete. Its construction began in April 1992 and culminated with an awe-inspiring opening ceremony on June 5th, 1996. The photograph not only highlights the engineering prowess required for such an ambitious project but also provides insight into its historical significance. Situated just three miles downstream from its predecessor, the Severn Bridge (which opened in 1966), this new crossing symbolizes progress and connectivity. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of how infrastructure projects shape our world and facilitate economic growth. The concrete caissons being carefully positioned represent human ingenuity at its finest – combining artistry with functionality. Thanks to Historic England Archive's preservation efforts, we can now appreciate this snapshot from our past – a testament to collaboration and innovation that continues to stand tall today as both a marvel of engineering and an essential link between communities on either side of the River Severn.
