Concrete batching plant JLP01_01_006_09

FILTON AIRFIELD, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. A concrete batching plant, with a Laing truck being loaded in the foreground, at Filton Airfield during the construction of a new runway.
Laing extended the runway westwards at Filton Airfield to accommodate the Bristol Brabazon airliner, which was being built at the airfield. Work began in July 1946 on the new runway, which was 2, 725 yards long and 100 yards wide. The work required the requisitioning and removal of Charlton village and a temporary flying strip was laid, for use while the new runway was under construction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Filton Airfield, South Gloucestershire. The image showcases a concrete batching plant, with a Laing truck being loaded in the foreground, during the construction of a new runway. In the 1940s, Filton Airfield underwent extensive development to accommodate the Bristol Brabazon airliner that was being built at the airfield. Laing took charge of extending the runway westwards, resulting in an impressive 2,725-yard long and 100-yard wide structure. The scale of this project required not only careful planning but also involved requisitioning and removing Charlton village. The photograph provides insight into the magnitude of this undertaking as workers diligently load cement onto trucks for use in constructing the new runway. It is fascinating to see how technology has evolved over time when compared to modern-day construction practices. Additionally, it is worth noting that while work on the new runway progressed, a temporary flying strip was laid out for continued operations at Filton Airfield. This temporary measure ensured minimal disruption to flight activities during this crucial phase. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print serves as a valuable historical document showcasing both human ingenuity and determination during an era marked by post-war reconstruction efforts within aviation infrastructure.
