EDITORS COMMENTS
This technical illustration from 1818 showcases the early innovations and milestones in the history of aeronautics. The image is filled with intriguing depictions of various balloon designs that marked the beginning of human flight. At the forefront, we see the Lana aeronautic machine, an early attempt at a powered flying machine by French inventor Jean-Pierre Blanchard's associate, Jean-Baptiste Lana. Although it did not achieve sustained flight, it paved the way for further experimentation. Next to it, the Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon is illustrated, marking the first successful manned flight in history. Their invention, launched on June 4, 1783, carried Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and Marquis d'Arlandes aloft, reaching an altitude of around 5,000 feet (1,524 meters) and traveling over 8 miles (13 kilometers). The Montgolfier brothers' design is followed by Blanchard's hot air balloon, which he used for numerous daring flights, including the first transatlantic crossing from France to the United States in 1793. Another significant milestone in the illustration is the depiction of André-Jacques Garnerin ascending and descending in his parachute, which he used for the first parachute jump from a hot air balloon in 1797. The Charles & Roberts balloon is shown in the process of being inflated, while the forms of the wings employed by Lunardi and Blanchard are also displayed. Lunardi's wings were used for his attempts at powered flight, while Blanchard's were for his glider experiments. This fascinating illustration offers a glimpse into the early days of aeronautics, a time of groundbreaking discoveries and daring innovations that laid the foundation for the modern aviation industry.
