EDITORS COMMENTS
This book illustration transports us back to the exhilarating early days of hot air ballooning in France during the late 18th century. The image, sourced from the AG Renstrom collection at the Library of Congress, showcases five remarkable hot air balloon ascensions that took place between 1783 and 1784. In the foreground, two Montgolfier balloons, named "Fauxbourg St. Antoine" and "St. Germain," are shown in various stages of preparation. The Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne, are credited with inventing the hot air balloon and conducting the first successful manned flight on June 4, 1783, in Versailles, France. Their innovative design utilized the natural buoyancy of heated air to lift the balloon, making it an instant sensation. To the right, Jean-Pierre Blanchard's balloon is being inflated, with its distinctive elongated shape and narrow base. Blanchard, a pioneering French aeronaut, was a key figure in the early history of ballooning, having conducted numerous successful flights in both France and England. In the background, a Charles and Robert balloon is being inflated at the Champs-de-Marseille and ascending at the Palace of Versailles on September 19, 1783. This particular balloon was named after its inventors, Jacques Charles and the Marquis d'Arlandes, who became the first humans to fly over a distance greater than a kilometer during their historic flight on August 27, 1783. This image offers a glimpse into the thrilling world of early hot air ballooning, a time when humans first took to the skies and dared to dream of flight.
