EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two of the most famous and coveted violins in the world: the Alard and the Guarnerius del Gesu, both crafted by the legendary luthier Antonio Stradivari. The image is taken from an illustration by William Gibb, as featured in "Historic, Rare and Unique Musical Instruments" by Alfred James Hipkins, published in Edinburgh by Adam and Charles Black in 1888. Alfred James Hipkins (1826-1903) was an esteemed English musicologist, who dedicated his career to the study of the history of various musical instruments, with a particular focus on the pianoforte. In this seminal work, he showcased a collection of rare and unique musical instruments, including these two exquisite Stradivarius violins. The Alard Violin, on the left, was named after the renowned virtuoso violinist Ole Bull (1810-1880), who owned the instrument from 1855 until his death. The Guarnerius del Gesu, on the right, is one of the most famous violins in history, having been owned by several prominent musicians, including the legendary King Joseph Joachim (1831-1907). The intricate details of the violins are beautifully rendered in this chromolithograph, providing a glimpse into the masterful craftsmanship of Stradivari. The rich colors and textures bring the instruments to life, capturing the essence of their historical significance and enduring allure. This image serves as a testament to the artistry and innovation of Stradivari, as well as the dedication of Hipkins and Gibb in documenting and preserving the history of these extraordinary musical instruments.
