EDITORS COMMENTS
This artists' impression captures the pivotal moment of the Allied breakthrough in Palestine during the First World War, on 19 September 1918. Five infantry divisions, including the 1st and 9th, launched a coordinated attack against the Turkish positions, with D Squadron serving as the advance guard under the command of Major Vigors. The Turkish troops, wearing their distinctive turbans, were taken by surprise as the Allied forces charged, both on foot and horseback. The 6th (Inniskilling Dragoons) and D Squadron, Royal Horse Artillery, led by Major Hodson, played a crucial role in the assault, providing cover fire and support. The scene is set against the arid Middle Eastern landscape, with the sun casting long shadows over the battlefield. The Great War raged on in Europe, but this victory in Palestine marked a significant turning point in the Middle Eastern theatre. The bravery and determination of the Allied troops shone through as they pushed back the Turkish forces, paving the way for further advances in the region.
