EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th century illustration, Plate 20 from Francois Le Vaillant's Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets, Vol. 1, depicts an immature Aratinga solstitialis, or Sun Parakeet, perched on a branch. The painting, executed by the skilled hand of Louis Bourquet, captures the vibrant blue hues of the parakeet's plumage, as well as the intricate details of its beak and tail. The young Sun Parakeet gazes intently at the sun, its feathers glistening in the light. The Sun Parakeet, also known as the Yellow-crowned Amazon or the Guarouba, is a medium-sized parrot native to Central and South America. This species, which belongs to the family Psittacidae and the order Psittaciformes, was first scientifically described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. The illustration, titled "La Perruche Ara Guarouba, jeune age," was created during the height of the Age of Enlightenment, a time when natural history was a popular pursuit among the intellectual elite. Le Vaillant, a renowned naturalist and explorer, traveled extensively throughout Africa and the Americas, documenting the natural world and collecting specimens for scientific study. Bourquet's illustrations, which were produced between 1801 and 1824, are considered some of the finest examples of natural history art from this period. The Sun Parakeet is a social and gregarious bird, often found in large flocks. It feeds on a varied diet of fruits, nuts, seeds, and flowers, and is known for its distinctive call, which sounds like a loud, clear "kra-kra-kra." This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this beautiful and intriguing bird, and serves as a reminder of the important role that natural history art played in the scientific exploration and documentation of the natural world during the 18th and 19th centuries.
