This striking print commemorates a pivotal moment in the American Civil War: the capture of Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Simon Bolivar Buckner at the Battle of Fort Donelson on February 16, 1862. The Union Army, led by Grant, had been besieging the Confederate stronghold for over a week when Buckner, in command of the Confederate forces, sent a flag of truce to discuss terms of surrender. Grant, who had been ordered to offer only generous terms to encourage further Confederate defections, granted Buckner and his army the privilege of marching away with their arms and equipment, provided they did not take up arms against the Union again. However, Buckner, unbeknownst to Grant, had already sent a message to Confederate forces in Tennessee and Kentucky urging them to resist the Union advance. This deception led Grant to change his mind, and he ordered Buckner and his officers to be paroled and released, but the rank and file Confederate soldiers were made prisoners of war. The Battle of Fort Donelson was a significant Union victory, as it marked the first major Confederate defeat and opened up the western theater of the war. This print, produced around 1887, captures the drama and importance of this pivotal moment in American history.
