EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and determination of soldiers from the Honourable Artillery Company (H.A.C.) as they undergo bayonet training during World War I. Dated 1916, the image shows a group of soldiers from the H.A.C. Reserve Battalion engaged in a close combat exercise at their training ground, Camp en Route. Each soldier is focused on their opponent, a sandbag, as they practice the art of hand-to-hand combat with their bayonets. The soldiers wear the distinctive uniform of the Honourable Artillery Company, complete with forage caps and rifles slung over their shoulders. The image provides a glimpse into the rigorous training regimen that soldiers underwent in preparation for the brutal realities of trench warfare. The Honourable Artillery Company, a part-time volunteer militia, was one of the oldest military organizations in the United Kingdom, and its members were proud to serve their country in times of need. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men during the First World War.
