In this historic photograph, we witness the arrival of the Royal party at the northern entrance of the newly completed tunnel. The Blackwall Tunnel, the first road tunnel under the River Thames, was built to alleviate the congestion caused by the increasing number of horse-drawn carriages and later motor vehicles crossing the Thames.
