EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Brown Cuckoo-Dove, Macropygia phasianella, a captivating bird native to the Pacific Islands. The image is taken from Prideaux John Selby's volume "Pigeons" in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh in 1835. The illustration was created by the renowned artist Edward Lear, who expertly captured the intricate details of the Brown Cuckoo-Dove's plumage and distinctive features. The Brown Cuckoo-Dove, also known as the Tailed Pigeon or the Pheasant-tailed Dove, is a member of the Columbidae family. It is characterized by its brownish-gray body, black wings with white spots, and a long, graduated tail. This bird is a ground-dweller and is known for its shy and elusive nature, making it a challenging species to observe in the wild. The engraving process used to create this print involved etching the design onto a steel plate, which was then covered in a thin layer of wax. The unprotected areas of the plate were then exposed to acid, which etched the design into the metal. The plate was then cleaned and inked, and a sheet of paper was pressed onto it to transfer the image. The final step was the application of hand-coloring, which brought the image to life with vibrant hues. This beautiful print is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the natural history illustrations produced during the 19th century. It provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the natural world as it was understood at the time. The Brown Cuckoo-Dove may be a small creature, but its presence in this historic work underscores its importance in the larger story of ornithology and the natural world.
