EDITORS COMMENTS
Caravan on the way to Kabul, Afghanistan in the Khyber Pass (1906): A captivating image of a caravan making its way through the Khyber Pass, en route to Kabul, Afghanistan. The rugged terrain of the pass is evident in the rocky, uneven road that winds through the mountainous landscape. Boxes and other freight are carefully loaded onto the backs of camels and the tops of carts, as the caravan makes its way northward. Soldiers, likely from the British Indian Army, can be seen standing guard at the front and rear of the caravan, ensuring the safety of the valuable cargo and the travelers. The Khyber Pass, located on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, has long been an important trade route between the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia. This photograph, taken in 1906, offers a glimpse into the arduous journey that merchants and travelers would undertake to transport goods and conduct business in this historic region. The train in the distance, a more modern mode of transportation, hints at the changing times and the gradual encroachment of modernity into this ancient trade route.
