EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the elegant and regal presence of the Duchess of Connaught, Louise Margarete of Prussia, nee Princess Royal of Prussia (1860-1917). The Duchess, who was the eldest daughter of King Frederick III of Germany and Empress Victoria of the United Kingdom, is seen here in her later years, having married Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, in 1879. The Duchess of Connaught was a prominent figure in both the German and British monarchies, and her life was marked by significant historical events. She was present at the proclamation of her father as German Emperor in 1888, and later became a confidante of Queen Victoria, who described her as 'the best and dearest of my children.' During World War I, the Duchess and her husband served as representatives of King George V and Queen Mary in Canada, where they were popularly known as 'The Duke and Duchess of the People.' The couple's warm and approachable demeanor endeared them to the Canadians, who welcomed them with open arms. This photograph, taken in 1917, shows the Duchess in her later years, with a calm and serene expression that speaks of a life well-lived. Her elegant attire, with its high collar and intricate detailing, is a testament to the refined fashion of the time. The Duchess of Connaught's legacy continues to be celebrated in both Germany and the United Kingdom, as a symbol of the close connections between the two monarchies and a reminder of a bygone era of royalty and grandeur.
