EDITORS COMMENTS
The Metternich Stela, a magnificent example of Egyptian art from the Late Empire period, is dated between 360 and 342 BC, during the reign of Nectanebo II of the 30th Dynasty. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, United States, this masterpiece is carved from meta greywacke, a dark, dense metamorphic rock. The stela showcases a complex composition, with various mythological figures and deities. At the center, the god Horus, represented by the falcon head, holds the goddess Isis, who is depicted as a throne-sitting queen, wearing a throne-like headdress. The god Bes, a protective deity, stands guard at the bottom, while an ibis-headed god, possibly Thoth, holds an offering table on the left. The upper part of the stela is adorned with hieroglyphic writing, which records a magical spell. The magical power of the text is believed to have protected the deceased, ensuring their safe passage to the afterlife. The lower part of the stela features a scene of a lion and an antelope, symbolizing the triumph of the god over chaos and the forces of nature. The intricately carved hieroglyphs and figures on the Metternich Stela demonstrate the advanced artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Egypt during the Late Empire period. The stela's preservation and display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art allow modern viewers to appreciate the rich history and mythology of this ancient civilization.
