EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Etienne Maurice, Comte Gerard (1773-1852), a renowned French military commander of the early 19th century. Born into a noble family, Gerard began his military career at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a brilliant tactician and a formidable leader. During the Napoleonic Wars, Gerard served under the Emperor himself, distinguishing himself in numerous battles, including the Battle of Wagram and the Battle of Borodino. However, his most notable achievement came during the Hundred Days War, when he led the French forces to a decisive victory against the Prussians at the Battle of Ligny in 1815. This victory bought Napoleon valuable time before his final defeat at Waterloo. Despite his loyalty to Napoleon, Gerard was not afraid to voice his opinions and even opposed some of the Emperor's more extreme policies. After the fall of Napoleon, Gerard continued to serve the French monarchy, eventually becoming a peer of the realm and serving as a senator. This portrait, taken towards the end of Gerard's illustrious career, shows a man who has seen the horrors of war and the tumultuous political landscape of his time. His piercing eyes seem to convey a sense of wisdom and experience, while his stern expression suggests a man who has made difficult decisions and lived to tell the tale. The intricate detail of the uniform and the elegant background add to the sense of grandeur and importance, making this a fitting tribute to a great military commander and a significant figure in French history.
