EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, showcases two distinctive and captivating bird species: the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) and the Broad-billed Roller (Eurystomus glaucurus). The illustration, produced in Paris, France, between 1816 and 1830, is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of the time. The European Roller, depicted on the left, is a medium-sized bird with a slender body and a distinctive blue-green back and wings. Its head is adorned with a black stripe, and its beak is short and curved. The European Roller is a migratory bird, breeding in Europe and Asia, and is currently listed as a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). On the right, the Broad-billed Roller, also known as the African Roller, is a larger bird with a broad, decurved beak, which gives it its name. Its plumage is iridescent, with a green back and wings, and a blue-black belly. The Broad-billed Roller is native to Africa and is also a migratory bird. It is currently listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN. This stunning illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The intricate stipple engraving technique used in this illustration required great skill and patience, resulting in a highly detailed and visually stunning representation of these two remarkable bird species.
